SMOKER
5 y/o Male, Black Smoke Exotic Shorthair Persian

Fully sponsored.  Thank you to all the wonderful people who donated towards his care.

May 2010 Update: Thanks to all the generous people who donated to Smoker’s care, he has had his nose surgery and dental.  He is doing so much better.  His breathing is SO much better.  He now has the ability to do some running and playing.  He has been running loops around his foster mom’s living area getting himself into shape.  He still walks a bit funny and can’t jump very high due because of his being caged for most of his life prior to coming to rescue.  He has started jumping up on his foster Mom’s desk and then into the large window sill where he suns himself for hours.  Smoker also loves his toys.  He carries them around in his mouth, plays with kitty dangling toys, and in fact will knock the basket of toys over to find his favorite.  His mouth is feeling much better as well.  He did have many of his upper teeth pulled during his dental due to them being broken and infected.  He has been a little eating machine ever since.  Smoker is blossoming and living life like a cat should for the first time.

What a darling little character Smoker is. Who could resist his adorable face? Little Smoker is just that – a tiny little man. He is quite stocky, but has short petite legs and tiny bones. All the other Exotics we have in rescue tower over him. Smoker is one of the last few cats from the 25 Persians in Crisis group from a few years ago. He is one of the few cats the owner was allowed to keep at that time, but we never forgot about him and have been trying to get him into rescue for the last two years. The call came, and one of our foster Mom’s dropped everything and ran right over to get him. Yeah! A few cute additionally notes about Smoker – he loves to have his nose rubbed and his chin scratched. Also, he LOVES bath time. He makes the cutest little chirps and coos as he is being bathed. We do need to be careful when we bath him because he often gets so relaxed that he falls asleep.

Smoker can’t jump more than a foot off the ground due to being caged on and off his whole life. Also, he really needs a nose job. Due to the extreme breeding of these cats, he basically has no nose. While to some that might seem cute, what we have learned is that he has stenotic nares. That means his nostrils are so small that he can barely breathe through his nose. The effort to breathe puts a huge strain on the lungs and cardiovascular system and if we don't get his nose opened up, it could severely limit his lifespan. The great news is that we've got a vet that has done dozens of these surgeries for us. Thankfully not every Persian needs this or we couldn't function as a Rescue for long. Additionally, Smoker needs some dental work done as his mouth does seem to bother him some. We can get the nasal surgery done including the pre-op blood work and the dental done at the same time for around $550. Please consider donating even a small portion to this guy's future health. He deserves it.
