A behind-the-scenes look at rescued cats and their transformation into beauty queens and kings. These cats came into Rescue with a myriad of issues: abscesses, viruses, filth, neglect, starvation, severe mats, sores, eye infections, you name it. Our wonderful volunteers spent several months giving these cats the medical attention, love and dignity they should have had their entire lives.

Toonka
While he was in the shelter he developed a severe case of Herpes Conjunctivitis and Calici virus. The ulcers in his mouth were so bad he stopped eating and had an esophageal tube inserted in his neck. Unfortunately his left eye ruptured and he had to have his eye removed. Read his full story here.

Penn
Penn was emaciated, and looked like a shorthaired cat or one that had been shaved. His eyes were sunken in and he had the gaunt look of a starvation victim. He came in covered in black scabs and crust. See more before, during and after pictures here.

Pirate
He had fungal infections of the skin, yeast, and bacterial infections of the ears. He couldn't jump due to being caged for most of his life without any vertical space. Due to a birth defect, he needed to have any residual eye in the left socket removed. You can see more pictures of Pirate here.

Gemini
He came to rescue from a filthy hoarder situation with 80 cats. Coming from such a horrible place, he also had emotional scars. He was unapproachable and slinked around the edges of the walls. You can see more pictures of Gemini here.

Bella Vie
Bella came into rescue at 10 weeks old.  She was diagnosed by our veterinary ophthalmologist with sever Herpes Conjunctivitis.  Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the fleshy tissue that lines the eyeball and inner eye lids.  If not treated it can cause corneal ulcers, loss of sight or loss of an eye.  She was treated for several weeks, round the clock and responded well to treatment.  Her eye will always be slightly watery over her lifetime.

Griffon
Griffon came to us from a very bad hoarder situation when 100 cats were abandoned on one small property. They were living in the attic, under the crawl space, everywhere. Probably sleeping in urine soaked ground, wet insulation, etc. We think Griffon's raw skin was irritation from the insulation and chemicals in the soil. See more photos of Griffon here.

Turtle Dove
When this kitty came to us, she was so matted that it looked as if there was a huge growth, or a second cat, sitting on her back. Underneath the mats, her skin was full of sores. Turtle was so thin you could see every single bone of her spine. She smelled of urine, cigarette smoke, and we're afraid to know what else. More pictures here.

Tucker
He came into rescue with Feline Herpes Conjunctivitis.  His right eye developed a small corneal abscess, not unusual for this type of severe infection.  He required round the clock eye medication prescribed by a veterinary ophthalmologist.  His eye responded well to treatment and we were able to save his vision.

Stanton
He was one of the 100 cats abandoned on a small property. He was living in an attic in urine soaked insulation. We think his fur was burned from insulation or pulled from his skin when fighting for food. When we first looked into the attic crawl space we thought he was a calico Persian. He wasn't a calico. The third color was the blood on his sides. You can see more pictures here.

Daisy Mae
She probably lived her whole life in the dog crate she was surrendered in. She never had the space to jump so she needed no jumping muscles. The mats on her legs both prevented movement and held her up. She was completely matted with hard felt mats everywhere. You will find her whole story and more photos here.

Beau Soleil
Soleil at 10 weeks had severe Herpes Conjunctivitis that required care of a veterinary ophthalmologist.   She also required surgery to correct the entropian (eyelid turning inward) that was causing irritation on her cornea.  The first surgery was not successful and she required a second surgery a month later.

Wanda
Her wide face was actually solid mats from her lips, all around her neck, and even atop her ears! She wasn't eating and we were so worried until we realized she couldn't move her head! Here is another picture of her with more of her story.

Creme de la Creme
We might as well have nicknamed her "Creme de la Crud". We knew that she'd been caged her entire life, and that she'd had skin problems that no one had been able to clear up. We were told that they'd only seen her in full coat once in her entire life. Read more about Creme here.

Lambchop
The fur on this cat was so horribly matted that it inhibited his ability to move, and he had feces matted into the fur on his hind end. He was covered in fleas and his eyes were injured and infected. He had several different internal parasites, some of which caused bloody diarrhea. He was so matted up he couldn’t move, and his feet and face were stained yellow. His eyes were sealed shut and infected. Watch Lambchop's story unfold here.

Rolls Royce
He lived in utter filth and actually lived in his OWN filth since the litter boxes weren't being cleaned. Rolls also had some nasty skin problems as a result of the years of matting. Because the skin couldn't "breathe" through the mats, it became damp. He had bacterial and fungal infections on his skin. Read his entire story here.

BIG BOY
Big Boy. 11 yo Blue & white Persian. A year ago you may remember reading on our site about 25 Persians in Crisis. An elderly breeder had health problems and needed to have all of her cats removed from the home. Big Boy was one of the oldies from that situation and one of the last ones to make it out. He looked so bedraggled no one really wanted to offer him a home. Read more of his story here.
